Opens 50th Starbucks Coffee store in Hawaii and 100th store within the Café Hawaii Partners family

AUGUST 2, 2005; HONOLULU, HI – Café Hawaii Partners, a Hawaii-based company that owns and operates Starbucks Coffee and Jamba Juice in Hawaii, Starbucks Puerto Rico and Jamba Juice Florida, announced two company milestones. Starbucks Coffee Hawaii opened its 50th store in Hawaii today at the Henry Street Shops in Kailua-Kona on the island of Hawaii. In addition, the Jamba Juice store opening on July 30, 2005 at the Henry Street Shops marked the 100th store in the Café Hawaii Partners family of companies (and the 28th Jamba store in Hawaii).

"We are very excited to have reached this significant milestone of 50 Starbucks Coffee stores in Hawaii and 100 stores within our Café Hawaii Partners company,” said Greg Meier, president of Coffee Partners Hawaii. “We are proud of these achievements and would like to thank our loyal customers and employees for our success, vibrant growth and strong brand acceptance in Hawaii.”

“We are extremely optimistic about our continued growth opportunities for the Starbucks and Jamba brands in Hawaii,” continued Meier. “Strong customer demand, brand loyalty and solid real estate sites continue to fuel our development plans for Starbucks and Jamba. In fact, we project doubling our Starbucks Hawaii store count within the next five to seven years and currently have 10 new leases signed for Jamba in Hawaii.”

Signed leases for Starbucks include the following new store locations: Pearlridge Borders, Kunia Shopping Center, Stadium Marketplace, Enchanted Lakes, Laniakea Center in Waipio, Kapolei Parkway, Moanalua Shopping Center, Kamehameha Shopping Center in Kalihi, Aloha Tower Marketplace, Ward Gateway (will replace current store located at Ward Village Shops) and Shops at Mauna Lani on the Big Island.

Jamba has executed leases for the following locations on Oahu: Kunia Shopping Center, Stadium Marketplace, Laniakea Center in Waipio, Kapolei Parkway, Moanalua Shopping Center, Kamehameha Shopping Center in Kalihi and Ward Gateway (will replace current store located at Ward Village Shops).

Café Hawaii Partners is a Hawaii-based company consisting of four separate operating entities that are managed as one business. Coffee Partners Hawaii owns and operates 50 Starbucks Coffee stores in Hawaii and JJC Hawaii, LLC owns and operates 28 Jamba Juice stores in Hawaii. In Puerto Rico, Café del Caribe operates 10 Puerto Rico stores and in Florida, JJC Florida, LLC owns and operates 12 Jamba Juice stores.

Many of the back office support functions, including human resources, finance, operations, marketing, information technology and training are shared and reside in Hawaii, providing local employees more opportunities to learn, grow and advance. Café Hawaii Partners currently has more than 2,000 employees between Hawaii, Florida and Puerto Rico and current annualized sales are approximately $100 million.

The Grand Opening Celebration for the new Starbucks and Jamba Juice stores at the Henry Street Shops is scheduled for Saturday, August 27th and will include live music, prize giveaways and sample size Frappuccino® blended coffee beverages and Jamba smoothies.

The first Starbucks store in Hawaii opened at Kahala Mall on December 12, 1996 and the opening set the record for the highest first days sales in a new market. Even though Starbucks has opened in over 30 countries since then, this record still holds today. The original business plan was for 30 stores in Hawaii, and although that goal was set for internal purposes only, it was somehow picked up by local media and ended up in the business section with quotes from naysayers who thought this was crazy. “Coffee will never work in Hawaii… The weather is too warm… 30 stores, no way,” they said. Today, the strength of the Starbucks brand in Hawaii is a testament to the passion, people and products that the Starbucks Experience provides.

In 1999, the Café Hawaii Partners portfolio expanded to include Jamba Juice. Jamba Juice seemed like the perfect complement to Starbucks and the Café Hawaii Partners team was also big fans of Jamba smoothies. Unfortunately, they quickly found out that Jamba Juice did not franchise. Although Jamba Juice is a privately held company based out of San Francisco, completely separate from Starbucks, they share several common board members. In the end, it was the trust and relationships the Hawaii team had built with the common board members that helped JJC Hawaii, LLC become the first area developer licensee of Jamba Juice.

In an effort to continue the growth of Café Hawaii Partners, in 2000 the team took an unusual turn and decided to expand the brands they knew and loved to other geographic areas. Leveraging the relationships they had developed with Starbucks and Jamba Juice, the Café Hawaii Partners team secured the exclusive rights for Jamba in the state of Florida and followed up with Starbucks in Puerto Rico two years later.
